Front porch

What are the challenges for renovating a second hand home? In this post I am not talking about money but ideas realized by other home owners to built / refurbish / renovate  their dream home.

Without knowledge and understanding of how homes are built, the architectural design of the home, we rely very much based on input from friends with civil and engineering background, consultations and advises from many different contractors who share their experience and what other home owners have done. These informations are regarded as invaluable and important in the process of decision making and designing the layout of the home we are about to renovate.

After much communication and question asking and getting quotes, now we have a more realistic idea as to how much renovation cost for everypart of the house. A touch up here, a hack there all cost money :(

Before making the final decision and actually letting the contractor to start work, we drove around PJ area to look at renovated house in the neighbourhood and investigate if what we have in mind will not have a problem with the authorities later on. Not that we will do anything extreme but just a rough ideas. Anyway, we have not decided the date yet as need to consult feng shui master again. I’d say we’ll delay it until September after Hari Raya so that I’ll have a peaceful holiday in August.

Here’s some pic I took of somebody’s home front facade.

 Modern design dont you think?

This house installed fixed window only and I wonder how about air ventilation? Probably the owner had the exhaust fan installed on its ceiling,  however how about when the house caught fire? There’s no way to escape from the front and there’s no way the owner can squeeze himself through the fixed window as its only half feet width or even less.

Keep the theif out but also endanger ownself as there’s no escape, don’t know what the owner thinks.

This photo, curi from dont know which blog page. I forgot to save it and now could’t find it. So sorry, thousand appologies.

What I can think of for this design is to allow sunligh penetration into the house as much as possible, and to protect the privacy and probably theft  without the need to install grille. But it needs high maintenance, as over the time - mold and what not will show and the owner must hire ppl to re-paint it (moreover more dust are trap)

This is also another intermediate house design. There’s no gate, and the porch is an open concept, no gate just the bricks floor. The other half of the porch was design like a garden, the owner must past the garden before entering his home and the door is way at the  back  or probably in the middle. It looks like an artist house, where the artist wanted a living space with greeneries and probably uses this home as his gallery too? I am just trying to guess.

This one is practical and simple. Good!!

I like this one too, it has a small garden at the side of the porch. The trend now for houses is to blend the grey colour and raw feel to the house and bring comfort to it by planting plants and decorate it with lots of greeneries.

This owner takes about  1 year to complete his renovation. Its a double storey actually and he utilise the high ceiling/ airwell of the house to make it to 3 storey breaking the roof and replace it with concrete slab roof. The pront facade was not painted and it give the raw concrete feel and soften it pulak with wooden panels on its wall. Some people may not like this concept but I think its beautiful.

After looking at so many designs of real homes I am tempted to change the facade of my 9dao too. So I sketch this but dont know it will work or not.

Also the eldest niece give me ultimatum of sorts and will be calling me cruel if I am going to get a dog from the pet shop ;(

Now if I were to get a pet, its gonna be from the adoption.

That’s all for now
