Cambodia Holiday- After Trip Day 5, 6 & 7

Day 5
Again today, we does not have any itinerary. Pretty boring here, but we have a abus to catch at 12.30pm. So we woke up a bit late today and walk to another rest for breakfast, then to thebluepumpkin to buy 2 pcs of croissant and 1 pineapple tart as lunch when we are travelling in the bus back to Phnom Penh. We stop by at the market half way to PP and I saw these sold at the road side. There is 3 Cambodian girls sitting beside us in the bus, and they bought each type of this and had it as snack in the bus. Ewwww.. Saw the spider there? Its really fat and big but I couldn’t imagine where they find it in such a big quantity?

We reached Phnom Penh at 7pm and since Andrew has a meeting in the office we waited for him to pick us up at Vespa Restaurant just next to the Mekong Bus Station.

We did not try the food from this restaurant but according to Andrew its one of the best restaurant.. and their meats are imported from Australia.

I forgot where we had our dinner that day. Could blog it here… hmm?!

 Day 6

Again we don’t have Itinerary for the day. We just want to chill out and relax. Andrew & Ivy suggested to go to the Killing Fields.. but I hesitated and told them we’re not keen to go there.

So in the morning, I woke up at around 10+ and we went out for breakfast at the FCC Phnom Penh. We have a seat upstair and have a nice view of the
Tonle Sap & the Mekong River. Nothing spectacular again as the water are not clear blue but muddy.

After having our breakfast, we went to Continental Hotel Phnom Penh and have some tea there, and chit chat until around 3pm+ and head back home
for a short rest. At around 5pm, we went to the Driving Range near to the Airport for some golf sessions with Ivy & Andrew, and of course I did not
play but just sit there and look. After the golf session we went to a spa & Massage house recommended by Ivy, The Champe and had 1 hr Upper Shoulder massage for a mere USD10. Consider cheap I think. And later we went for dinner at the French Latatate restaurant and supposingly they serve very good sandwich there in the review book. Too bad the sandwich is not good at all. So dont go there!!

After dinner, we went back home and take a rest.

 Day 7

We fly back to Malaysia and I am so delighted to be home to my Home Sweet Home and I miss my bed.

Cambodia Holiday- After Trip Day 4

Day 4

We didn’t have plan today. Supposingly in my Itinerary, I was planning to hire a tuk tuk to go Tonle Sap, but after the bus ride on day 2, and experiencing the dusty air everywhere in Siem Reap I abandoned my plan or to put it as PLAN CANCELLED. It is just so dusty in Siem Reap and occasionally we smelled some busuk longkang smell, which is a turn off, so I wore mask most of the time when I am outside. Hubby has been sneezing on and off coz he refuse to wear the mask like I did, but eventually he gave in. He too just couldn’t take it anymore. Dusty!! and even a heavy vehicle on the road is driven could make the road a big cloud of dust! Imagine that. So I really really advise anyone going there, Mask in Siem Reap is a must!

So since today we does not have any itinerary, we decided to have breakfast outside instead of the hotel. We went to thebluepumpkin recommended by
the tourist on the internet. Here’s what we’ve ordered. 2 sets of Siem Reap Breakfast. Coffee freshly brewed, Orange juice is fresh, Marmalade wasn’t too sweet, Croissant was so yummy! and the rye bread is soft. Hubby chose Donut instead of Croissant and it is so soft and not too sweet. I would say Perfect Breakfast, with some time for some facebooking as thebluepumpkin has free wifi.

My hubby checking emails.. and messaging.

Me here promoting the bakery!!

After breakfast, we went to the Center Market and Old Market for some bargain of souveniers for family members and close friends. Bought 3 t-shirts for USD5!!! So cheap. .. then I saw a 3M pocket book made from the cambodian silk and bargain it for USD6 for 5pcs. That’s all I bought for the souvenier, I will distribute the Madam Sachiko cookies to my colliqs too, so sorry really can’t get other souveniers as I think other souvenier is not nice lar as I’ve said in my Day 1 visit to the french market.

After some shopping, we went to Red Piano at Pub Street to quench our thirst. Nothing to do ma, and hubby has been sneezing and having flu, but he still pui me to come to this rest for some drinks. Poor him, already given him 2 tablets of Panadol soluble 2 nights ago when we reached Siem Reap, tablets of Vit C and 100 plus for him to keep energetic and to improve his condition, Poh Chai Pill and Charcoal pill for his stomach problem, still he wasn’t well.

After afternoon drinks, its only like 1pm and we walk back to the hotel to rest and have afternoon nap. We again came out from the hotel around 5.30pm and look for a place to eat. We went to Red Piano again, and I really didn’t know which restaurant too choose, there’s so many. So this time, we sit at the first floor of the restaurant and below is the other side of the pub street and we saw lots of tourist actually went for a BBQ at the roadside stall. The road side stall look decent coz the person handling the food wear clean clothes by the look from far and he’s wearing the chef’s hat. Too bad, I don’t think we want to be  adventurous in Cambodia as the water here is not clean and the Cambodians rely on NGO to help them filter the pipe water. So drinks and juices with ice cubes are a Big No No unless the restaurant says they only use bottled water.

After dinner, we walk home and stumbled upon another 2 market, which only operate at night. One if the Moon Market and another is Angkor Night Market. Before you made a purchase at the Old/Center market I think it would be good if u come to the night market too, I think the souvenier there have better quality or look nicer. Perhaps its because of the lighting?

After so much walk, we just call it a night and rest early as usual.

Cambodia- After Trip Day 3

Day 3 As advised by most tourist, Sunrise in Angkor Wat are suppose to be spectacular. But me being a lazy bum and not a morning person, we did not wake up at 5am for the sunrise.

We woke up at 7.30am on Day 3, and our Tuk Tuk & Guide will be picking us up at 8.30am for the 1 day Temple visit. Ivy suggested to get a guide which will make the Temple visit more interesting. So at last, we decided to go ahead and chose Mr. Ho Ouk as our Tuk Tuk Driver for 1 day and a guide arranged by the Hotel.

The first Temple we went, were of course the Angkor Wat. This picture was taken, when the guide is still explaining about the history of the Angkor Wat and the 5 elements of Hindu’s believe which one of the element is the water. In this photo, the Angkor Wat is actually surrounded by the man made Lake.

Below photo, the guide told me the position I am standing can get a good photo shot, which it really does. Saw the reflection of the Angkor Wat from the water lily pond? The Photo could be better if the Lily pond is well taken care of, it looks so dirty.

As far as we know, Cambodia is a seriously corrupted country. As explained by the guide, our Temple visit ticket fees are collected by the Sokla co. whereby the owner is a Cambodian Tycoon and the money he collected are not given back to the Angkor Wat sites for restoration. The money are pure profit to them. The people are angry at this, but they cannot do anything to fight the riches and the authority.

Back to Angkor Wat, having a guide is really better than not having one. You’ll notice it when they show you around the temple and started telling you the stories of the Hindu’s believe, the Siva. Letchumi, the Devil and more over, they will also tell you which and where you can find a very special Apsara Dancer. They will point it out to you like in this photo below, this Apsara Dancer were actually different from the rest. It shows that the Apsara Dancer smiling with her teeth shown/visible. Or I may put it ‘Big Grin’? The guide will also show you another Apsara Dancer with a Bikini in a hidden corner of the temple, which if you are not familiar with the temple and if you have not spend days or weeks in the temple, you wouldn’t know or notice the differences and some are at hidden place in the temple.

Really thanks to our Guide, Mr. Mean Tealy he is also our Photographer of the day. Since only 2 of us travelling, taking any photos together will always be a problem, we can only get single shots most of the time or ask for help from other tourist to help us take a couple of photos together.

After Angkor Wat, we had our lunch at a local Khmer Restaurant operated by Khmer Chinese. Most of the business owners in Cambodia are also chinese, and in a way not surprising to me.

Orang Cina Boleh!! Dimana Pun Boleh!

We went to Ta Phrom after lunch. The made famous Temple by Angelina Jolie in the making of Tomb Raider. Ta Phrom is the Temple where u can see the root
of the trees covering the temple.

By the way, look at the pants I am wearing. I’ve worn the same pants for 3 days already and I will continue wearing it throughout until I get back to Malaysia.

After Ta Phrom, we went to Angkor Thom. Angkor Thom is larger and has several Temple sites in it. One of the Temple in fact is there is no indoor. You cannot go into the temple but climb up to it. Too bad, the temple is not open for visitors at this moment, and the guide also can’t tell when the Temple Restoration will be completed courtesy from the French Government.

When we were in Angkor Thom our temple visit finish at around 3pm. At that time we already feeling tired and templed-out. No more temples, playing in my mind at that time. If the guide wanted to bring us to see more, I guess I would really say no. After this trip, I would say both me and hubby are not really those historical person, and of course its amazing to visit one of the Wonders of the World, but historical sites like this.. To us, apart from the architectural, we aren’t that excited as much as the europeans as we prefer beach or scenery more than historical sites. Look at our happy face, we’re leaving the temple, on our way back to the hotel to freshen up, the Angkor Wat Road is where all the 5 star hotels are located like the FCC, Meridian etc.

The Madam Sachiko Cookies is available here. Maybe the local does not know where is it, because it is a cafe/bakery open by Japanese there.
http://sparklette.net/travel/siem-reap-madam-sachiko-cookies-angkor-national-museum/ Check out the sites. The cookies are very expensive, its sold at USD15 for 30pcs. We asked the guide to bring us to D’Artisan Angkor which is near to our hotel to look at Artisan work? The silk sold there is nice but pricey. Then we went back to the hotel and rest before going out food hunting.

After shower, we went out for our dinner at Happy Herb Pizza. Ever wonder what does this Happy Herb means? The pizza top actually has some sprinkles
of marijuana, which will make you happy!

Marijuana for personal consumption in Cambodia is actually legal. It is not for sale, but somehow this restaurant still able to sell it in this way, by sprinkling it on top of the pizza, maybe they have bribe the officials?! When we were having our dinner, a local bring an european to the restaurant to get the happy herb i guess, by their look I think the rest does not sell it to the european in such a way, so hubby said the local sure bring him else where to buy it. After dinner, we walk back to the hotel, stopping by at the center market nearby but did not get anything. . The rest of the night we just lazying around in the hotel and have beer at the Hotel’s cafe playing some cards.

Cambodia Holiday- After Trip Day 2

Day 2

We woke up at 6am today and get ready for our bus trip to Siem Reap. Its a 6 hours ride by Mekong Express Bus as written on the ticket.at 6.45am we had our quick breakfast prepared by Ivy, 1 fried egg, 2 pcs of hotdog and a cup of hot milo and we left to the Bus station near to the Tonle Sap Jetty. When Andrew’s driver trying to find our Bus, we saw the Sokla Bus station and I saw a new deluxe double decker bus. So I tot wow, that bus is new and must be comfy. Hmm since our bus is recommended by the Tripod Advisor, highly recommended so the Mekong Express must be as good as that. As the driver round the area, he couldn’t find the bus station and he finally have to get down as ask other bus operator where is Mekong Express? Then he drove further up and there ‘gasp’ and telan my saliva ‘gulp’.. that’s our bus? Mekong Express? I checked my ticket, yup, in the Internet it is called Mekong Express Deluxe Coach but on our ticket, its written Mekong Express Limousine Bus? Why different one? Nvm.. we got down

and asked the Operator. Are we taking this bus? pointing our fingers at the old bus. The Kind operator said, yes sir, you may board the bus. Will we enjoy the ride? I am somewhat dissapointed and was thinking how come Sokla bus is so much better. Now when I am sitting here typing I realised.. Sokla is owned by the Cambodian Tycoon lar. Of course they can afford to buy new bus!
We board the bus, nothing else we can do, nor can we refund the ticket and jump to Sokla bus right? At that time I am still thinking of Sokla bus, nope the deluxe coach to be exact, and waited for other passengers to board Mekong Express. To our amazement, the bus is full of tourist mostly. Wow.. guess all of them read Tripod Advisor too.
This is the bus we have to board.

The Bus depart at 7.30am sharp and throughout the journey, we got the chance to look at the scenery or a glimpse of the Cambodian country side, which what I saw mostly are rice fields, some I am not sure is rice or just tall grasses, and the Cambodian homes look very much like our Malay Kampung House just not so nice but still with the four leg and house above the ground kind. Many of the front part of the house has a small pond of some kind dug with water lilies in it, but the pond are not maintained, and they look dirty, guess its for feng shui like Angkor Wat, which I will explain later.
We reached the Mekong Bus Station in Siem Reap at 1.30pm and we were greeted by the friendly Mr. Ho Ouk the tuk tuk driver arrange by the hotel. We booked 3 nights stay at The Villa Siem Reap hotel, and they provide us with a free tuk tuk pick up. Mr. Ho Ouk is so friendly and I am happy that I actually asked to have him as our tuk tuk driver for the next day. Mr. Ho
Ouk offered us some cool drinks courtesy of the hotel to quench our thirst and on the way to the hotel he pointed out some places like Center Market, and Pub street and in fact the hotel is near to these places, around 5-10 minutes walk depending.

Once we reached the hotel, we need not do any long procedure for the check in. The hotel staff is so kind. We just gave them our name, and they show us to the room. That’s it. No deposit, nothing. Maybe we pre-booked the room earlier and they have our credit card info secured, but this is really great, save so much hassle and we can go to the room and rest after a tired bus ride.

Hubby wanted to sleep right away, but I am so hungry, I took our the fried rice lunch pack prepared by Ivy and started eating. I dun care I am hungry and I am going to eat now and I dunwan to wait for Hubby to eat together with me. I am hungry!! kakakka but then Hubby woke up and join me. We had our lunch in the room and we rest until 4.30pm.
We went out at 4.30pm to the Angkor Wat temple and bought our 1 day Temple Visit for tomorrow. Just to save some time of queing tmr morning. There is so many tourist there at the time we went there and all of them too wanted to buy the pass. Nvm since we are there we just buy, and surprisingly they do things quick 1, not like our friendly ppl back in Malaysia geh. They
are friendly + quick, ours are Friendly+tak apa tunggu lar+Malaysia boleh ma. ‘(abit racist now).
Ok, after bought our ticket, the tuk tuk driver (another one) bring us to watch Sunset at Bakheng Hill. We have to hike up the hill and by the time we reached the top, its already 5.30pm. We saw sunset, but its not any spectacular view, not the egg yolk type. At the Bakheng Hill, there is this ruin, famous of the steep stairs are really a challenge as the stairs are high with very short steps space and steep. Nasty steps as the european describe it. From the top of the Bakheng we saw apart from the so-so sunset, we saw the Hot Air Balloon from a far. I wouldn’t recommend any of the tourist to go for the Hot Air Balloon as it cost USD15 per person and according to my SIL who has taken the ride before. The whole thing look like Hot Air Balloon but without any hot air. The balloon were raised by a machine to few metres high for you to see the scenery afar and its just a 10mins time lifted in the air. Just that.

We left the Bakheng Hill around 6+ and its really dark. In Cambodia, 6pm is like Malaysia’s 7.30-8pm. So going down the hill is dark, and we did not bring any torchlight, so we follow other tourist and walk faster. After that our tuk tuk driver sent us to Pub Street for dinner. Hubby wasn’t feeling well at that time, so we went to a Khmer Restaurant serving local Cambodian food, which are really similar to chinese food/Thai food except Cambodian don’t take spicy. I ordered a vege fried with roasted pork and a glass of Orange juice and Hubby as usual, with his stomach discomfort he still ordered a glass of beer.

Me.. while waiting for dinner to be served @ Pub Street.

The Orange juice I ordered came and it wasn’t orange juice. Its actually Mandarin Orange juice that is not sweet, and they put some ice in it which make me unconvince to drink it. But I still took a few sip of the juice. I still fill my stomach full eventhough the vege dish and the pork taste are not to my liking. I’m hungry wat, the dinner cost us around USD7 or less.
We just call it a night after the dinner and walk back to the hotel for a hot shower and the rest of the night spend in the room watching cable tv. I slept at 10pm I guess.

Cambodia Holiday- After Trip Day 1

Day 1

We woke up late this morning. Hubby’s Handphone suppose to rang at 5.30am, but it did not.. apparently the alarm was set to rang on Mon to Fri. So It was Sat and it did not rang. Then we heard an sms sound and I wonder how come so early someone so muka tebal sms? Then Hubby asked what time is it? ‘ I dunno wor, should be not yet 5.30am lor coz the alarm has not rang’ then I woke up and checked the handphone. Gosh!!! its 6am now.. and the sms was from the Limo
we have booked, Mr. Alan informing us he already arrive.
We quickly take a quick shower and left the house at 6.45am, still plenty of time to waste as our flight is at 9.30am. The flight was slightly delayed due to one of the passenger did not board the plane, they have to unload the baggage of that passenger. Finally the plane depart at 9.45am and we reached Phnom Penh at 10.30am finally at the airport arrival and was greeted by Andrew, with his big grin and offer Hubby a ciggi.
We went straight back to Andrew’s house, before arriving his house I can see that the guard ran to open the door, and there Ivy is waiting for us with some tong sui ‘green bean dessert’ to welcome us. Piper, forgot the breed type of the dog with big bump and ears like rabbit, greeted us like a ‘mad dog’ where it actually run to everybody, jump here and there, licking our legs and fortunately Piper does not bite. Very friendly dog and love to play soft toy.
Andrew’s house is like a mansion with 5-6 rooms all with attached bathroom, its a typical khmer style of furnishing which I personally don’t quite like too much woods but according to the lovely couple, this is the only home which have the least wooden furnishing. lol. We went for lunch at about 12pm at a restaurant near to the riverside or the lake Tonle Sap, serving Khmer Food. As usual, Hubby ordered Beer as in the beverage list and the beer in Cambodia is super cheap.

A can/bottle of Anchor Beer (Cambodian pronounce it as Ang Choor) cost USD1.5 and a bottle of Angkor Beer is only USD0.50. Food is considered cheap for tourist price range from USD3-5 and I said consider cheap if we Malaysians don’t convert the currency. In Cambodia need not to worry about food, Japanese, Korean, Western, Khmer, French Mexican and even Malaysian/Chinese food is easily found there. But 1 thing I need to comment of the food is I am not sure about other ppl, but Hubby and I found that the Pork and the Beef taste and smell are really not to our liking.. I dunno how to describe it exactly but it taste
abit weird, too porky taste or too beefy taste? hahah in chinese we call the taste as ‘sou’.
We went to the French market on that day too, its actually an old market that does not sell anything frenchie. In fact whats sold in the market are the usual the tourist souvenier which we find them as nothing interesting, its all like those typical souvenier we can get in any part of asian countries, and similarly what you can get in Bali, you can get it in Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia with the different destination name on it. Could it be from same manufacturer or something?
Later that day, we went to a temple up the hill.. again I forgot what that place called. Its actually next to the US embassie that is very huge in Cambodia, rumours says US have alot of spy there to keep an eye on the drug trafficking activities there. This place has a big clock and the Cambodians says that any unmarried couple who went there will eventually broke off from their relationship. This makes it easy for the Cambodian couples right?

I mean they don’t have to say anything.. just bring your partner go there and they know what happen next. What I heard also is Cambodian really like to choose to suicide if they have relationship problems, either they broke off with boyfriend or gf married another guy or the families dissapprove of their relationship. They will go to the Bridge at Phnom Penh if not mistaken the Bridge is a donation from Japanese Government crossing the Mekong River on the way to Siem Reap, and jump off the bridge there mostly. So nowadays the authorities are always there to keep an eye just in case any of their ppl going for a suicide.. which usually happens during lunch time when ‘everyone’ having lunch.

That night we went for Dinner at Restaurant 112 inside an old ancient French Colonial Building cum Apartment/hotel. Its a very nice restaurant, and if just they can move this whole place back to KL, I think the owner can earn big bucks from just the decor.. frenchie and romantic. Food wise is just okay. I like the ambience of this restaurant very much.
After dinner we went to the Casino, owned by Vincent Tan, I think.. its the Nagaworld. In comparison to our Genting Casino.. its kinda small and not many gamblers too, less crowded and nothing much there in fact. It was a breezy night and since today is the first day of our Holiday and tmr we have to wake up early for the Bus ride to Siem Reap, we head home and call it a night. Really need to have some sleep and its already 11.30pm then.
