Day 6 Stay at Mueller Motel, Franz Josef
Posted by blurcheryl in Holidays, New Zealand on January 13, 2012
Lets talk about Mueller Motel here. I booked our accommodation for Franz Josef through an online site and I forgot about me booking this place until about 2 weeks before the trip. I mistakenly remember that we are going to stay at YHA Franz Josef but I couldnt find any booking details to convince myself I am staying in YHA.
Then I found out we are staying in Mueller Motel instead YHA. Okay I booked a motel and not a backpacker. Sounds good anyway. I think the reason why I choose Mueller Motel over YHA is because each room offers an ensuite bathroom which will be more convenient given the competitive room rates that Mueller Motel was offering. I tried looking for maps and website for this motel but failed. Its not in the web at all except various internet booking sites also has listed this motel in their bargain corner/ hotel list. So I wonder… and concluded with ‘Fuck it I am just going to sleep there attitude’ and that’s how we ended up staying in this motel.
So…
After a whole day long long distance drive we reached Mueller Motel without any trouble its just located Off Highway 6 before Franz Josef small kuci town. Its still raining and its very very cold as we are at some remote higher altitude location I suppose. What is describe about Mueller Motel on the booking sites is true. The motel offers a background spectacular view of the snow capped mountain but its too late and too chilly outside to be appreciate that.
Driving around the parking lot there’s no Lobby on the site, and we only notice a small sign indicating motel residents to collect keys at the pub. That’s strange I thought.
I got down from the car and get into the pub and was greeted by an Indian Pub Manager who I later found out to be someone from rich Indian Family from India. The Pub Manager or the Restaurant Manager also happened to be the Motel Manager. Talk about multi managerial post, he’s the man! Anyway, he handed our keys to the rooms and off we went to check -in and rest.
First thing we got to the rooms, Yeobo’s siren activated. Nature calls -_-’
Aiyo.. the toilet’s faulty. Cannot flush properly. So we went to the pub and told the manager the toilet is not in good condition so we asked to change another room. The manager said he will send a technician to check the toilet and will let us know if they can repair it. So while waiting for that we had our dinner at the pub/restaurant and have some drinks.
See? I am drinking
Frankly the room that we got was facing some bushes, and I really felt uneasy as it was quite dark and I dont like dark places. Who does? But the real issue is still the toilet. After we finish our dinner and the manager came back given us another key to the room next door. We went back and check on our new room. Still the toilet is not functioning well, and the toilet bowl has quite an obvious hairline crack. I am not going to risk cutting my ass while dumping or peeing while on holiday?! No way! So we walk back to the pub and ask for another room.
This time the room is further from the rest of the rooms and the corridor was not lit. We basically walking in pitch blackness not very far away, but its really dark there.
Quekkkkkk… open the door.
Okay no lah, there’s no creaking sound. Its all my imagination. But I do felt uneasy.
This time the room’s toilet roof is leaking and the room has those old musty mushy smell. I quickly ask Yeobo to quickly leave and worst come to worst just go back to the first room we got.
We then went back to the pub again and tell the manager of our findings. At that time I felt like I am a room inspector. This time, the manager gave us several sets of room keys informing us he is not sure which room already cleaned and which is not, but those rooms are located in front. To my delight, front rooms are brighter. The manager then appologize to us for all the trouble.
We went another round to inspect other rooms before settling with one of the last rooms which has functioning toilet but still with slightly old musty smell which I can bear with and I am so so so tired already.
Still at the end of this trip, this motel was by far the worst accommodation I ever stayed in NZ and while sleeping I snug under Yeobo’s armpit and cling to him whole night cause I scare got Hantu.
I was so happy when the sun has risen cause no Hantu kacau.

New Zealand Day 4 Stay at Plimmerton Seaside
Posted by blurcheryl in Holidays, New Zealand on December 21, 2011
Have I started to bore you? I am still writing on Day 4 … *yawn
Its really a long day for the drive from Taupo to Wellington, however the long drive does not tires me as I am not driving mah.. ngek ngek ngek..
After we left Tongariro we made a stop somewhere at the junction of Ohakune National Park on Highway 49 for a quick bite at Subway.
Due to some miscommunication which obviously the waitress was dreaming when we ordered our meal, my meal ended up with pork ribs and meatball 6 inch long Subway.
Luckily I shared this with Hubby…without the meatballs.
After lunch, we shop at the Countdown supermarket to get some food supplies for next day ferry ride.
After a short shopping trip, we drove straight to Plimmerton Beach where we spend the night at Moana Lodge a backpacker hostel highly recommended by Tripadvisor!!
What I like about Moana Lodge
- Clean Clean Clean
- They have a bar at the Living Room
- Cosy and beautiful Lodge, it makes you feel like home unlike other backpackers
- Friendly Service!!!
- Located at Beachside and the rooms have beautiful views!!
Its worth every penny if you get a room with the sea view, its so romantic!!
Just sat at the living area and watched the beautiful scenery outside..
What a Bliss!!
We walk to the beachside for some breeze and relaxing stroll along the beach while trying to decide if we should skip going to Wellington.
Here’s a photo of the Plimmerton Beach .. so beautiful!!
Seagulls… lots of them
Taking a photo of Yeobo.. I like this photo hehe
Walking along the beach, day dreaming.
The sea waters cold!!!

New Zealand Day 2: Stay at Rotorua
Posted by blurcheryl in New Zealand on December 5, 2011
We had a long day this day, waking up early taking flight to Auckland, drove about 350KM to reach the destination for the night in Rotorua, which is 156KM from Waitomo approximately 2 hours 15 minutes drive away.
We left Waitomo about 6PM, took a slow drive to Rotorua. Since Kiwis finish work early like 5PM, so I give a call to Kuirau Lodge in Rotorua to inform of our late arrival at about 8.30PM.
Once we reached Kuirau Lodge, Pam greeted us with a warm welcoming smile and direct us to our Lockwood Chalet just a minute drive to the back of the mainhouse where they host the B&B. Pam gave us the key to the chalet, show us around the house and left without asking for payment. She wants us to settle down and get some rest and pay her the next day when we leave.
We quickly prepare our dinner and call it a night as we are soooo… tired.
Here’s the amount of food we brought from Malaysia, just incase we reach our destination and grocer stores are closed or too lazy to go out for dinner. We had instant noodles and instant rice with some can food not forgeting homemade anchovies Sambal too!!
I have to say that Kuirau Lodge in Rotorua is the best stay/ accommodation we had the whole trip at a very reasonable price!
What I like about kuiraulodge:
- Friendly host! Thanks to Pam and Arthur!!
- Clean Clean Clean
- You can do laundry!
- Free WIFI
- Free SKY TV
- 3 Rooms very reasonable price
- Beautiful Lockwood Chalet I wouldn’t want to leave
- Free Coffee, Tea and Milk!
- Most comfortable bed.
- Near to town
We stayed in the Lockwood Chalet…
The next day, we met Arthur at the mainhouse where he host the B& B.
The mainhouse is so beautiful! !!
It has a warm ambiance, very clean, spacious, elegant wood dining table ^_^, Guest lounge equiped with Home Theatre facilities, Room ensuite with Bathroom, freshwater hot swimming pool (omg). I never seen such a beautiful home before and you know what, Arthur show to us that some of his chalet has won some architectural award!!
So sorry, I didn’t bring my camera as I left it in the car and I cannot be running back to the car to get it and go back to the mainhouse to take photos infront of the host. So malu..
Anyway, you have to see this place to believe it, Highly Recommended.

12 Full Days in New Zealand : Accommodation
Posted by blurcheryl in Holidays, New Zealand on August 8, 2011
Another 3 months to go, its going to be Spring/ Summer in New Zealand and its peak holiday season but we were lucky that our travel dates did not clash with school holidays. Anyhow, I have to quickly book and secure a place to stay.
On Day 12 in my previous New Zealand 12 Full Days Self Drive Route, we are suppose to stay in Dunedin but all accommodation in Dunedin is fully booked so we have to move slightly further and stay at Oamaru instead.
I have listed our accommodations in New Zealand - backpackers/ motels/ lodges that we are going to stay that suits our budget but with great reviews.
I hope I will not be dissapointed, will update with the accommodation reviews after my trip. We will be spending about NZ$960 in total for myself and hubby in Double ensuite rooms arrangement. Yes, eventhough backpacking I still wants the privacy and the luxury of an attached toilet
