Awesome Catch @ Balok Fishing Village, Kuantan
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia, Holidays on April 13, 2012
Once again its Ching Ming Festival in April and we went back to Kuantan to pray my in-law ancestors. I missed all the fun which I very much look forward to as family time together as I have to excuse myself from going to the cemetery due to the monthly P thing. Sad!
After paying tribute to the ancestors the whole family make a short trip to Balok, a small fishing village in Kuantan. In case you didnt know, every year Balok host the International Windsurfing Regatta and were acknowledge as one of the 10 best beaches in the world by the international wind-surfing and kite-surfing sportsmen.
How I wish I can follow them to Balok rather than sleeping at home. My BIL has an appointment with the fisherman when they bring in the Catch of the Day.
Its Live Scallop!! Its HOTATE!!!
If I were there, I must be leaping in Joy and buy a whole lot from the Fisherman. My BIL bought only a kilo I think and its damn cheap! Only RM5 for a kilo.
My BIL baked the Scallops. He didn’t remove the ‘red’ thing and the ‘white’ thing. What is it called? I dont know. I assume its what differentiate the male and the female of the scallop. What I read from wikipedia/Scallop its the Roe?
Its so Yummeh!!! So fresh!!
You cant get any fresher than this, even at the restaurant. Right? Right?

Mini Zoo Kuantan
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia on August 5, 2011
If you visit Kuantan, dont miss the Mini Zoo in Taman Teruntum, because …………….
It is Free!!
You can see Sun Bear!
Coming from Kuantan town, you will pass by the mini zoo before reaching the Teluk Cempedak. This place is hard to miss and they have a huge road sign at the side of the road.
Not entirely well maintained zoo but I still find it still worthwhile to visit, its run by the government I presume still its not a bad to add this attractions to your itinerary. No rush right? Btw parkings are ample, free also.
Anything and anywhere free you must go (kiasu).
Here’s another few shots of the cute sun bear. I wonder if I can keep one of his nails? Just a thought!
I am not sure what bird is this. Is this a hawk? This place is like a vacation home for the squirrels because they can easily find food here. I saw a pair of hornbill too.
What is this animal call already ah? Cannot recall. Okay.. its the otter (Thanks Mel)
A pair of duck, Sang Kancil (mouse deer) and baby goose.
Deers, Porcupines and Ostriches
Bought a bunch of long bean and fed the deers.
Visiting this mini zoo will only take you 30 minutes!

My Sun bear
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia, Holidays on August 4, 2011
Okay the sun bear wasn’t mine. . but I always find the opportunity to go to the Kuantan Mini Zoo to look at the sun bear. I dont understand why the rest of my Kuantan family members find it hilarious whenever I said I want to go see the sun bear. I only saw the sunbear in Kuantan zoo summo its free!! I can just drive in, park my car which I dont need to pay at all and walk up to the sun bear enclosure.
That day the sun bear has a bit more ‘action’ than usual.
The standing pose
The sitting pose
The hungry face pose
The sun bear is so cute!!
TweetKuantan Makan Makan: Kemaman Hai Peng
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia, Family & Friends, Holidays on August 3, 2011
We went back to Kuantan after the lunch meal in Kemaman. Then hubby brought us to Hai Peng Kopitiam, since its already another 1- 2 hours past.
When we reached Hai Peng, our niece ask me to choose either Tuna sandwich or Egg sandwich. Her recommendation is their sandwich is very nice. So I ordered egg sandwich but she dont like it. Haha!!
Hubby said their bun is very nice. So He ordered one serving for us to try.
Aiyoh!!! I didn’t know I missed out on this awesome bun all this while coz my stupid hubby said its not so nice anymore. Another of his stupid effort by not bringing me to try!! According to hubby, they made the bun and the kaya themself (don’t know how true is that).
This is the Hai Peng branch in Kuantan open by the grandson.
The Kopitiam itself has this old rustic charm and I like the fact that their tables has a marble top, with wooden chair setting and they use old chinaware. Kinda brings me back to my childhood time having a cup of milo in the saucer because it cools faster, while my father drinks from the cup.
I ordered a cup of Hai Peng Kopi to try. Biasa oni lah!

Kemaman Makan Makan: Ikan Kembong Noodle
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia, Family & Friends, Holidays on August 2, 2011
Oooh… I’ve been absent for a while. Been so busy lately and my laptop crashed for 2 days.
Anyway, some updates of my recent Kuantan trip with my parents. I’m so glad they enjoyed the short trip despite I didn’t really bring them to many places. Nothing much going on in Kuantan itself, except food.
We reached Kuantan in the morning, about 11am and bring them to for nice Bak Kut Teh. I think I am really a bad daughter because my father wanted to ask for the 2nd bowl of rice and I stop him because I wanted to bring him to Kemaman for another meal.
I must bring my parents to try the noodle here. So I pester Hubby to drive another hour from Kuantan to Kemaman just for this.
The noodle shop exterior look like this. It is next to the medan selera and near to the bus station.
The shop name
Many of its customers will order this dish, a steam Mackerel/ Ikan Kembong which is very fresh. So each of us, had one serving of fish.
Also the special noodle. The noodle broth is made from the fish bones and a mixture of the Mackerel/ Ikan Kembong steam juice. Bought a packet of keropok and dip it into the fish broth and eat it. Yummy!
I like to eat chilli, and I add some picled chilli padi into my noodle too.
After the noodle, we skip Hai Peng Kopitiam in Kemaman because we are too full to have a cup of coffee even. Its okay, Kuantan also got Hai Peng according to hubby.

TweetBalok for Fresh Fish
Posted by blurcheryl in Cuti Cuti Malaysia on July 28, 2010
For the past years my BIL has been supplying fresh fish for us to bring back to KL. TQVM. Because of my BIL, we get to eat really Fresh fish and I stopped buying fish from KL. Living in the city we hardly get fresh fish. . and hah! I didn’t know that by successfully Netting my hubby (my sui yu) I get real fresh fish to eat! not that my hubby is a fish monger or what but he has an awesome Brother who cleverly hunt for fresh fish all around Kuantan.
Wanna go see fresh fish?
Last Saturday evening we went to Balok located about 13 km away from Kuantan which is famous for wind surfing activity. So from Kuantan you’ll pass by Pak Su Restaurant in Beserah before reaching the Swiss Garden Resort which is located very near to Balok. According to my BIL, he frequented Balok for its fresh fish! What I am saying fresh here is.. the fishes probably are still alive or just died on the counter. Yes, that kind of fresh! Fresh Catch from the Fisherman everyday.
Here’s a few photo’s to share. How to get to this Pasar Nelayan in Balok I have no idea. I really couldn’t give you any direction. I know that you have to turn into the inner kampung area. Maybe you can use a GPS to find Pasar Nelayan LKIM Balok, or ask the locals.
This pasar Nelayan is very small only, and its near to the beach.
I’m so excited about fresh fish, I went down to the market and have a look. Fresh Grouper, 5 left and my BIL bought 2 for our dinner the 3 left are of smaller size. and as shown in the photo there’s still 1 fish left that is alive! Yes.. I am not kidding you.
See those flies there? It shows the fish is super fresh wor.. Lalat oso makan you dunwan makan ah? If no lalat/ flies then the fish is full of chemical ok!
Fresh Kembong Fish. Look at the skin on the back of the fish.. its greenish in colour. I never seen any fresh kembong before, I thought this was another kind of fish, the colour just tricked me into thinking such way. Usually the kembong fish colour is dark greyish, come out from freezer is that kind of colour if not mistaken. But this shows how fresh the fish is.. its greenish! and the standard-Look at the clear fish eyes!
This one here is Barracuda. So gigantic. Dunno taste nice or not.

Barracuda very ugly la!
